Julebord 2015: Christmas dinner with friends

Let's get the Christmas period started with our lovely friends - on November 25th! Why already end of November, even before the first advent? Because there didn't seem to be a date in December, before Christmas, when we would all be available and in Oslo. Within the next weeks we all seem to be pretty busy, with various appointments, other events and some already head off pretty early to their home country for Christmas.
After having had the julebord (norwegian word for Christmas dinner/party) with our friends at our place last year, we all gathered on Wednesday evening at Ginta's and Hadrien's place.

SKÅL alle sammen!

For the dinner we had split up the food preparations so everyone brought something different along and it wasn't left to just one couple to prepare the whole lot of food.
For a starter we had little caprese sticks (with tomato-mozzarella-basil), pain d'épices (French "spice bread") and foie gras (French delicacy made out of fattened duck liver).
For the main dish, Ginta and Hadrien had prepared two crunchy filled ducks (which they lovingly named Betty & Bernie) with boiled herb potatoes and baked apples.

After the main course it was time to play, time for our funny "Secret Santa" game I introduced already last year and was an absolute success. Let's explain how it works:
1st step: Everyone brings along one wrapped present (for a value we established before, about 100 NOK). This present is not meant for one specific person. All presents are placed on the table.
2nd step: Then we all throw a dice, one after the other. At a 1 or a 6 (or chose any other number(s)) one is allowed to pick one of the presents from the middle of the table. The dice continues to go around (but only among those that do not have a present yet!) until everyone holds one present.
3rd step: One after the other unwraps the present he/she got in front of the others and shows/explains to them what it is.
4th step: Now the funniest part starts. We set a timer (e.g. on the mobile phone) for a certain time - we set it for 8 minutes (1 minute per person) and then started throwing the dice again. One after the other, clockwise. At a 1 or a 6 you HAVE to (yes, it's mandatory!) SWAP the present you currently hold with that of someone else. Your are not allowed to chose your own present you brought. However, it may happen that someone swaps a present with you, making you end up with your own present in your hands. That's ok. Means you can passively get your present, but not actively take it from someone at a 1 or a 6. This continues until the set time has run out which means during the set time (e.g. 8 minutes) there is a continuous exchange of presents, back and forth, over the table and between the various participants. Once the time has run out the swapping stops and you won the gift you hold in your hands in that moment :-)
This is really so much fun!!! Because there's always presents "in favour" that everyone fancies and thus everyone is fighting for. Everyone hopes to get one last chance before the timer rings to throw a 1 or 6 to take your favourite present. Just great and entertaining!
This year's Secret Santa trophies (from left to right on below picture):
  • I won regenerative preparation/pills for MEN (to increase testosterone, muscle strength and a third thing) - ha ha ha :-)
  • Ines got a 2016 diary and a cinnamon candle.
  • Marco won what most of us were fighting for: 2 bottles of Portuguese wine (1 red, 1 white) Ricardo had brought who just came back from Portugal that afternoon :-)
  • Ricardo: he (= man) was the lucky one to receive the regenerative preparation/pills for WOMEN (for better skin, strong hair and something) - LOL!
  • Hugo received a well scented piece of soap and a "to-do list" note block.
  • Sona ended up with a bottle of extra virgin olive oil.
  • Hadrien got the present I had brought along: 4 place mats.
  • Ginta's acquisition: a moustache shaped envelope opener.

After the hectic 8 minutes, it was finally time to kill all the delicious dessert we had: home made Portuguese "pasteis de nata" from Ines, tiramisù (based on the recipe of Marco's mother - yummy!), a typical Lithuanian dish by Ginta: a mix of some sort of peas with poppy seeds in a milk based liquid (I can't remember the name of it, though) and from me some home made German Christmas cookies and imported Christmas sweets (Lebkuchen & Printen)...
...accompanied by some tea and/or Sicilian dessert wine.

Trying to make music with a wine glass.

Sorry, Hugo and Ricardo, for not having posted a portrait photograph of you, but the two I had weren't really in your favour ;-)

Around midnight, Hugo and Sona unfortunately had to leave already (to catch their last tram and metro to get home). But the others of us remained (as we live in walking distance) and we played a couple of rounds of "Scotland Yard".

What a lovely evening that was - thanks to all of you guys (and thanks, amore, for the pictures)! Now, yes, we're all in Christmas mood :-)

GOD JUL!
