17th of May 2009 - National holiday and the Russ party

The 17th of May is Norway's national holiday. And believe me: the Norwegians do celebrate it!!! From Germany I'm not used to celebrate a national holiday, so it was even more amazing to see how these people here celebrate it.

Already early in the morning people start lining up at the roadside of Oslo's main street Karl Johans Gate which leads right to the Royal Palace. At 10 am the Royal family comes out on the balcony to greet the public for several hours. Dressed in traditional clothes (so called bunards) and waving Norwegian flags, school classes with their teachers from all primary schools in Oslo march along Karl Johans Gate up to the Royal Palace where they pass the balcony in order to greet the Royals.

This parade lasts several hours. It's amazing to attend this impressing celebrations and to look at all those different costumes. Every little village has its own special "bunard" which makes this day really colourful.

I went to see the Royals together with (f.l.t.r.) Céline, Mélia, Céline Marie and Ulla.

Russ - Students celebrate their A-Level:

In between all those national celebrations you have the "Russ" students in their coloured trousers. Depending on which type of school they attend the pants' colour varies (the most common one is red for the general schools). Already a month before the 17th of May they start celebrating and you see them EVERYWHERE in the streets. They celebrate the end of their time at school before they will start their A-Level exams in the end of May.

As part of their celebrations they decorate busses they use among others to travel a lot before their final exams.

What an interesting and impressive day!
