Galette des rois

"Galette des rois" or in English "kings' cake" is dominating in these two days among the French.

A kings' cake is a marzipan based type of cake associated with the festival of Epiphany in the Christmas season in a number of countries. It is very popular in France. The cake has a small trinket (often a small porcelain figure) inside, and the person who gets the piece of cake with the trinket becomes the king/queen, gets a crown that comes always with the cake and he/she has various privileges and obligations (such as buying the cake for the next celebration).
The "galette des rois", kings' cake, takes its name from the biblical three kings. Catholic tradition states that their journey to Bethlehem took twelve days (the twelve days of Christmas) and that they arrived to honor the Christ Child on Epiphany, January 6.

Like last year, Stéphanie, my French colleague, brought some home-made galette des rois and one other cake with chocolate to the office which we had all together in the afternoon.

This is a good start into my working week after having been on holidays.
