1st of May walk in the Ahr valley

1st of May = Labour Day = a day off :-)
I used the occasion of this day off from work to fly to Germany to spend some days at home. It was just a very short stay, but nice and relaxing.
Tuesday evening (29/04) when I arrived I went straight to the volleyball training with the group I used to play with. The training was followed traditionally by a "Stammtisch", a gathering of some regulars to have a beer and some snacks together. This is always very nice!

Wednesday evening (30/04) my mum had organised a wonderful BBQ evening with some family and friends. Some juicy and grilled meat - so highly appreciated when living in expensive Norway where a steak becomes a luxury product. And well, a traditional BBQ is simply always a pleasure!

Thursday 1st of May drew a lot of people for a walk in the Ahr valley wine region, my mum, Engelbert, my brother and me included. The weather wasn't maybe the most beautiful and warm, but it was perfect for a little hike up to the Krausberg hill. And we were definitely not the only ones with that idea. The whole area was teeming with people benefiting from this day off.

Arrived on top of the Krausberg.
So typical: pea soup with bacon, grilled steak in a bread roll and a "Currywurst" (large grilled sausage in curry sauce).
"Prost!" - of course! We're in an area famous for (red) wine so we needed to have a sip.

 The Krausberg ruin.

On the way back down to the valley: fields of broom.

The vineyards.
The village of Dernau.
Down in the village we met up with some friends for a glass of wine at Kloster (monastery) Marienthal.

What a fantastic way of spending this 1st of May :-) Really loving this area - and just a stone's throw away from our doorstep!

Friday (02/05) was packed with little things to do here and there (hair dresser, groceries for Norway, shoe shopping,...)

Saturday (03/05). Already around 2 p.m. my brother and I left home to drive to my father's and his wife Andrea's place in Hennef. We both hadn't seen our father for a while so we spent him a visit and stayed overnight at their place. In the evening we all went out for dinner at a close by restaurant with quite solid food (i.e. a lot of meat).
The initial plan was to attend a special event named "Rhine in flames" during late evening. It's an annual event taking place in many towns all along the Rhine river where the whole area is light by huge fireworks shot from the boats on the river. In many places (such as the big park in Bonn, the Rheinaue) this event is accompanied by a lot of music, carousels, a ferris wheel and many beer and food booths. All in all quite a big, but cool event - if the weather is good! I hadn't been to this event for ages. This year was the first time after many years that I was home when it was "Rhine in flames" and I'd certainly loved to go there. But eventually it just didn't fit in the course of the evening anymore. We had a good time eating and chatting together with our father so that "Rhine in flames" simply dropped out.

After a short night sleep it was already time to leave Germany. Relatively early my father accompanied me to the airport and well, now I'm back in Oslo typing this post about some great days at home :-)
