Toscana - weekend in Bella Italia

On May 14th there is something to celebrate for amore mio and me - our 8th anniversary :-)

Finally this year we even managed to spend this special day together. I had booked a flight with Lufthansa via Munich to Bologna, already on the Thursday 12th.
Only shortly after my arrival - it was soooo nice to be finally back again with him in Bologna - he surprised me with an invitation for a weekend in Toscana :-)
He had booked an agriturismo near San Gimignano, a typical agriculturally-based accomodation facility or farm often with their own restaurant offering their own local products. Marco had booked a night on our Saturday 14th of May. His idea was, though, to extend this stay with a night before in Siena and so we looked up together for a hotel in town.
Friday 13th of May:

We left around noon. I still had to finish something for work which I could do from my own pc.
A three hours drive brought us finally to Siena where we checked in to our hotel of which I can't remember the name.

Only after a short break at the hotel we left to the nearby historic city centre which has been declared by UNESCO a World Heritage Site.
We enjoyed some time on the shell-shaped Piazza del Campo, the town square, which houses the Palazzo Pubblico with the Torre del Mangia and which is famous for hosting the "Palio" horse race twice a year.

After a while we continued to the Duomo, the Cathedral of Siena, built in the 12th century...

...strolling through Siena's narrow streets...

...until ending up once more at the Piazza del Campo.

Despite the beautiful weather, we left the square at around 8 p.m.; the hunger pushed us to one of the restaurants in the area.

 Saturday 14th of May:

We left Siena right after breakfast towards San Gimignano, another 45km from Siena.
The weather was again beautiful. It was warm and super sunny. How I missed this from Oslo! I so much needed this: sun and warm temperatures!

Also in San Gimiagnano we just strolled through the streets, enjoyed the sun, some creamy Italian ice cream and the beautiful spots of the village.

After a quick lunch to go we did some shopping for tradtional pasta, cold cuts and of course local wine.

In the early afternoon we left Siena to check in to our agriturismo.

The agriturismo "La Lucciolaia" was just a 10 minutes drive away, beautifully located in the countryside with view at San Gimignano.

It was perfect pool weather on so it didn't take long until we had the swim suits on and jumped into the fresh water.

Somewhat before 6 p.m. Marco and I decided to have a walk around in the vinyard of the agriturismo.

For dinner we drove back to San Gimignano and had a vast 3 courses dinner :-)

Late in the evening we returned to our accomodation for the night.

Sunday 15th of May:
This day wasn't the most promising. It started with pourring rain... and unfortunately a pretty scarce breakfast. This weather didn't invite us for another tour of San Gimignano and so we headed back in direction of Bologna.
On our way, though, we stopped in Firenze to visit Ciccio, a friend of Marco. We just made in on time for lunch so Ciccio and his girlfriend invited us for some pasta.

In the late afternoon we were back in Bologna where I still stayed until Tuesday early in the morning when I had my flight back to Oslo.

Amore mio, questo weekend è stato proprio speciale! Troppo bello! Grazie mille, tesoro mio, per questo bel regalo!
